GSA Mutual is a Fine Art Collective of recent Glasgow School of Art graduates. Its four founding members produce thematically curated exhibitions and art events in Glasgow. Seeking to uphold egalitarian approach The Mutual practitioners are self elected not selected. Film works screened in CCA1 and Atrium accompany Glasgow Short Film Festival.
By using the grotesque, the visceral and the chaotic Vickie McDonald employs film and installation to explore our primal and un-socialized selves. Seeking to create a sense of abjection and transgression, influenced by Antonin Artaud's concept of 'the theatre of cruelty', McDonald examines ideas of censorship and horror as popular entertainment. Jamie Carter’s film work, by contrast, has a whimsical or humorous and occasionally scathing tone. He frequently places himself costumed in a fantastical setting. Adopting the aesthetic of Medievalism, his degree show work parodied art school internal politics. Recent works by Maximilian Swinton are dark and shocking but with a comedic undertone. Swinton uses taxidermy and masks to create absurd, nightmarish scenarios; he exhibited recently as part of the New Contemporaries exhibition.
A ream of visuals - works in various media by Mutual artists exploring heroism and anti-heroism - are also screened as part of the collection.
