Con Artist
“Modern art is a con,” Mark Kostabi once said, “and I am the world’s greatest con artist.” Michael Sladek’s documentary certainly provides the proof of the pudding as it offers a witty profile of the disgraced enfant terrible of the New York art scene. Kostabi had a hunger for fame and attention in the 1980s that makes Jordan looking like a shy, retiring violet. He made no secret of the fact that he employed people to supply bright ideas, passed those on to skilled painters and then made his sole contribution of adding a signature to the finished canvas. Shameless charlatan or sly satirist? This is your chance to decide.
