Bluebeard (Barbe Bleue)
Catherine Breillat creates her own darkly distinctive version of the Charles Perrault fairytale in this compelling account ofsisterly love and a shocking serial killer. In 1950s France, a young girl torments her older sister by reading the story of the notorious Bluebeard. We are then transported back in time where two teenage sisters are left penniless orphans by the death of their father. Marriage to the local squire is an attractive option although the sudden disappearance of his previous wives is a worry and there is a sinister room that nobody must enter. Thus an elegant slice of grand guignol unfolds.
