Bare Essence of Life (Urutora Mirakuru Rabu Sut'R)
Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Hailed as one of the emerging superstars of Japanese cinema, writer/director Satoko Yokohama’s second feature is an assured, heartfelt romantic drama. Kenichi Matsuyama stars as a mentally challenged young farmer who happily tends his grandmother’s organic vegetable garden. A beautiful nursery schoolteacher arrives from Tokyo to make a fresh start and come to terms with the tragic death of her boyfriend. Set against a vivid depiction of rural life, this is a sensitively handled, offbeat tale combining human drama with acute observations about our relationship with the land.
