All Around Us (Gururi No Koto)
Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Ryosuke Hashiguchi’s lyrical epic offers an intimate portrait of a marriage set within the bigger picture of sweeping social change in Japan. Kanao works in a shoe repair shop and has recently married his college sweetheart Shoko. The leisurely flow of their life together changes when Kanao is offered a job as a courtroom sketch artist. His new occupation gives him a front row seat at some of the country’s most notorious cases and allows the film to depict the dark heart of Japanese society. A country’s troubled soul is reflected in the trials and tribulations of Kanao’s own marriage in this richly detailed drama.
