About Elly (Darbareye Elly)
Winner of the Berlin Silver Bear and the Best Narrative Feature at Tribeca, About Elly is a compelling drama about the culture of deception that has come to define Persian life. Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti) is a nursery school teacher who is persuaded to accompany a group of old university friends on a trip to the Caspian. Elly doesn’t realise that Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) has the ulterior motive of playing matchmaker to her and the divorced Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini). Sepideh’s good intentions have tragic consequences as the gentle, lighthearted charm of the film’s early sequences darkens into a haunting, tension-filled mystery.
