Face (Visage)
Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang makes art films that people either adore or despise. The lyrical, grandiose Face is no exception as he creates a work of stunning visual inventiveness that might feel more at home in a gallery than a cinema. It all unfolds in the Louvre where a Taiwanese director is attempting to make a film based on the story of Salome. The result is a work of astounding beauty complete with dazzling musical numbers, a magical forest, eye-catching costumes from Christian Lacroix and a celebration of the spirit of the nouvelle vague featuring such Gallic icons as Jeanne Moreau, Jean-Pierre Leaud, Nathalie Bay and Fanny Ardant.
