Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi The Killer) underscores his cult reputation with this frantic big screen adaptation of the hit 1970s television anime. Marbled with explosive action sequences, raunchy innuendo and goofy humour, the film is a breathless spectacle with echoes of Indiana Jones and Barbarella. Aided by their giant canine robot, teenager Gan Takada and girlfriend Ai Fukuda are locked in eternal battle with the evil Lady Doronjo who seems to buy her clothes from the same fetish shop as Halle Berry’s Catwoman. Their goal is possession of an all-powerful Skull Stone that could obliterate the planet. A wild, fun-filled guilty pleasure.
