Women Without Men (Zanan-E Bedun-E Maradan)
Internationally renowned for her photography and video installations, Shirin Neshat’s feature debut won the Silver Lion at Venice and is a powerful adaptation of the controversial Shahrnush Parsipur novella set in Tehran on the eve of the CIA-backed coup that restored the Shah to power in 1953. The film deftly interweaves the stories of several women striving to escape the clutches of their society and achieve independence. The poignant characters include Munis who is at the mercy of her brother, army wife Fakhri and prostitute Zarin. A gorgeous, involving, multi-layered drama.
