Vincere
The official version of Benito Mussolini’s early life overlooks the fact that he had a wife and a son. Veteran director Marco Bellocchio drags that hidden relationship into the spotlight for a bravura film with startling insights into the true nature of Il Duce. The young Mussolini met Ida Dalser in 1907. It was Ida who financed his political career. She bore him a son and became his wife only to discover that her husband had married another woman and would gradually erase her from his life. Told with all the passion and energy of a grand opera, Vincere combines newsreel footage and fiery performances to haunting effect.
