Vacation (Kyuka)
Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Capital punishment remains a highly contentious issue in Japanese society. Without recourse to tear-jerking melodrama, Hajime Kadoi creates a compassionate, moving drama around the issues of law and order. Hirai is a middle-aged prison guard worn down by the daily grind of his job. Kaneda is a model inmate on death row. When a date is set for Kaneda’s execution, Hirai is asked to assist the prisoner in his final moments. The reward is a week’s vacation in time for his honeymoon. The cost is accompanying Kaneda through his final meal, his last hours and physically supporting him as the execution takes place.
