She, A Chinese (Zhongguo Guniang)
The latest feature from director Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today?), follows a sullen, stubborn Chinese girl on a journey from her small village to London. Li Mei endures a miserable life in rural China. The first stage on her journey is a bus to Chongqing where she finds work in a succession of dead end jobs and meets a hitman. The calendar in his room has a picture of Big Ben which becomes her inspiration for the dream of a fresh start in a faraway land that doesn’t always live up to her expectations. A lowbudget drama delicately capturing the fragments of a broken life.
