The Little One (La Pivellina)
Documentary duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel make an auspicious move into narrative filmmaking with this low-budget charmer set among an extended family of Rome-based circus folk. Patti is wandering the streets of suburban Rome in search of her runaway dog Hercules when she spots a two-year old girl sitting on a swing. The child appears to have been abandoned and so Patti decides to take her home. The little girl is adorable and is soon befriended by teenager Tairo and the whole circus. They all know they should contact the police but cannot contemplate letting her go in a tale performed with amazing grace by a non-professional cast.
