Island of Dreams (Yume No Shima)
Departures - New Japanese Cinema
Tsuta Tetsuichiro was just 23 when he made this eyecatching debut feature, a loving throwback to the Nikkatsu film noir action movies of the early 1960s. Shot in black and white cinemascope, it focuses on Alan, a young man of Indian descent who works on the notorious artificial island/rubbish dump in Tokyo Bay known as Dream Island. Appalled by Japan’s casual disregard for the environment, he turns eco-terrorist targetting factories in Tokyo with his home made bombs. Detective Terayama races against the clock to prevent a major incident in a suspenseful retro thriller with a strong social conscience.
